Product Offering

A growing list of East Coast and Gulf Coast states mandate the use of hurricane resistant products in wind-borne debris regions. Our products meet the testing standards for wind-borne debris as outlined in ASTM E 1886 and 1996, and Florida Building Code (FBC) Protocols TAS 201, TAS 202 and TAS 203. Kawneer hurricane resistant products have been independently tested and received Florida Product Approvals (FL #s) and Texas Department of Insurance (TDI #s).

At Kawneer, we manufacture hurricane resistant entrances, storefront framing, curtain walls, windows and balcony doors. Hurricane-Prone Regions
Areas vulnerable to hurricanes are the U.S. Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico coasts where the basic wind speed is greater than 90 mph and Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Guam, Virgin Islands and American Samoa.

Wind-Borne Debris Region
Areas within hurricane-prone regions within 1 mile (1.61 km) of the coastal mean high water line where the basic wind speed is 110 miles  (48.4 m/s) per hour or greater; or where the basic wind speed is 120 miles (52.8 m/s) per hour or greater, or Hawaii.

 

Large missile impact tests simulating large wind-borne debris, such as tree limbs, sign  posts and other large objects, are required for products such as entrances and storefronts installed up to 30 feet above grade.


Small missile impact tests simulating smaller wind-borne debris, such as roof gravel, are required for products installed more than 30 feet above grade, such as curtain wall, sliding doors and windows. Test requirements call for entire systems – glass, frames, sealants, locks and fasteners to resist wind-borne debris followed by severe pressure cycling.

    • Incorporates portions of the South Florida Building Code.
    • Requires wind-borne debris protection of glazed openings in buildings for all areas that fall within:
      •  The 110 mph wind zone within one mile of the coast.
      • The 120 mph and above wind zone for all areas except the Florida Panhandle.
      • One mile of the coast for the Florida Panhandle.
    • Exterior glass products must be tested by an approved, independent testing laboratory.
    • Impact-resistant products must comply with ASTM E 1886 and ASTM E 1996, FBC Protocols TAS 201, TAS 202 and TAS 203.

    • ASTM E 1886 – Standard Test for Performance of Exterior Windows, Curtain Walls, Doors and Storm Shutters Impacted by Missiles and Exposed to Cyclic Pressure Differentials.
    • ASTM E 1996 – Standard Specification for Performance of Exterior Windows, Curtain Walls, Doors and Storm Shutters Impacted by Wind-Borne Debris in Hurricanes.
    • Miami-Dade County BCCO (Building Code Compliance Office) – Florida approved certifying agency.

Basic Wind Speed

    • Values are nominal design, 3-second gusts, wind-speeds in miles per hour (mph) at 33 feet (10 m) above ground for Exposure C category.
    • This map is accurate to the county.  Local governments establish specific wind-speed/wind-borne debris lines using physical landmarks such as major roads, canals, rivers and shorelines.
    • Island and coastal areas outside the last contour shall use the last windspeed contour of the costal area.
